Task:

Creative knitwear design

For the teacher

The design process for knitted fabric starts with the shape that is sought. A mannequin is required for this task. Students can bring large T shirts from home, or the teacher can obtain them for the school. The shirts used and the remaining cutting waste can be weighed in order to evaluate how much of the material was successfully reused.

Creative knitwear design

  1. Choose several large T shirts.
  2. Draw a line drawing of the design and assemble the product on a mannequin. Consider the measurements, seam structures and sewing order.
  3. Cut the pieces precisely with sharp scissors.
  4. Pin the cut pieces in place. Check the item of clothing’s measurements on a mannequin.
  5. Consider the details, such as the neckline, hem, sleeve cuffs and decorations.
  6. Sew the pieces together in accordance with your design.
  7. Add the final touches and inspect the product.
  8. Photograph the product on a customer or yourself.
  9. Consider what can be made from the cutting waste or how you will recycle it.
  10. Document the whole process.
